Turkey Tail (Coriolus versicolor)

Turkey Tail Mushroom Extract

Coriolus versicolor (Trametes versicolor)

One of the most extensively researched medicinal mushrooms in the world — Turkey Tail's colorful concentric bands resemble wild turkey feathers and grow on fallen logs worldwide. Containing PSK and PSP — two of the most clinically studied immune polysaccharides from any natural source — Turkey Tail is a cornerstone of integrative immune support.

Benefits: Gut-Brain, Immune Support, Neuroprotection
Type: Mushroom
Forms: Capsule, Liquid, Powder

What Is It?

Trametes versicolor (also called Coriolus versicolor) is one of the most common and widely distributed mushrooms in the world — found on fallen logs and dead trees on every continent except Antarctica.
Its distinctive multicolored concentric rings in shades of brown, tan, white, and grey closely resemble the
fanned tail of a wild turkey.

Turkey Tail has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries as a Qi tonic for immune strength and longevity.  In Japan, a purified polysaccharide extract called PSK (Krestin) derived from Turkey Tail has
been an approved cancer support treatment for decades — making Turkey Tail one of the most rigorously clinically studied functional mushrooms available.

How It Works

Turkey Tail's immune benefits come from two primary polysaccharide complexes:

- PSK (Polysaccharide K / Krestin) — a protein-bound polysaccharide that activates multiple arms
of the immune system including natural killer cells, dendritic cells, and T-lymphocytes.  PSK has been studied extensively in Japan as an adjunct to cancer treatment

- PSP (Polysaccharide Peptide) — a related polysaccharide with similar immune-activating properties and additional prebiotic effects that support beneficial gut microbiome composition

- Beta-Glucans — activate innate immune responses through Dectin-1 receptors on immune cells

- Gut Microbiome Support — PSP acts as a prebiotic, selectively increasing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium populations while reducing potentially harmful bacteria

Side Effects & Considerations

Turkey Tail has an exceptional safety record from both traditional use and extensive clinical research:

- Very well tolerated — some of the most extensive human safety data of any functional mushroom
- May cause mild digestive darkening of stools
- Those with autoimmune conditions should consult a doctor
- May interact with immunosuppressant medications
- Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing without medical supervision
- FDA has approved Turkey Tail extract for use in clinical trials alongside conventional cancer treatment —
exceptionally strong safety validation

Typical Dosage Range

500mg – 3,000mg daily

Studies use 1,000-3,000mg daily of Turkey Tail extract for immune support.
Consistent daily use is recommended — immune modulation effects build over weeks to months of regular supplementation.

Within the Troomy Daily blend, Turkey Tail contributes PSK and PSP activity to the comprehensive immune formula.

Research Notes

- Standish et al. (2008) — Published in ISRN Oncology, found Turkey Tail PSK significantly improved
immune function markers in breast cancer patients following conventional treatment.

- Pallav et al. (2014) — Randomized pilot trial in Gut Microbes demonstrated Turkey Tail significantly
altered gut microbiome composition, increasing beneficial Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium populations.

- Jayachandran et al. (2017) — Systematic review in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine documented Turkey Tail's comprehensive medicinal properties including immune, antioxidant, and prebiotic effects.

- Tsang et al. (2013) — Research confirmed PSP from Turkey Tail significantly enhanced natural killer
cell activity and T-cell proliferation in healthy adults.
