Uncaria Rhynchophylla (Cat’s Claw)

Cat's Claw (Uncaria Rhynchophylla)

Uncaria rhynchophylla

A traditional Chinese and South American medicinal herb named for its distinctive hooked thorns. Used for centuries to support neurological health, reduce inflammation, and promote calm — now gaining modern research attention for neuroprotective and anti-anxiety properties.

Benefits: Focus, Mood & Stress, Neuroprotection
Type: Herbal Extract
Forms: Capsule

What Is It?

Uncaria rhynchophylla is a woody vine native to Asia (particularly China, Japan, and Southeast Asia) whose
hook-shaped thorns resemble a cat's claws — giving rise to its common name. It is related to but distinct from the South American Cat's Claw (Uncaria tomentosa), and has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for over 2,000 years under the name "Gou Teng."

Traditionally used to calm the mind, reduce tremors, lower blood pressure, and support neurological conditions, Uncaria rhynchophylla contains a rich array of alkaloids and flavonoids that modern research is beginning to validate for neuroprotective and anxiolytic applications.

How It Works

Uncaria rhynchophylla's bioactive compounds — primarily alkaloids including rhynchophylline, isorhynchophylline, and corynoxeine — work through several mechanisms:

- Calcium channel blocking — alkaloids inhibit calcium influx in neurons, reducing excessive neuronal excitation and supporting a calmer neural environment
- NMDA receptor modulation — regulates glutamate activity, the brain's primary excitatory neurotransmitter, reducing excitotoxicity
- Anti-inflammatory — reduces neuroinflammation through inhibition of NF-κB and microglial activation
- Neuroprotection — emerging research shows protective effects against amyloid-beta accumulation associated with cognitive decline
- Cardiovascular — rhynchophylline has demonstrated antiarrhythmic and blood pressure lowering effects
in research models

Side Effects & Considerations

Uncaria rhynchophylla has a long history of traditional use with a generally favorable safety profile:

- Well tolerated at standard supplemental doses
- May lower blood pressure — use caution with antihypertensive medications
- May enhance effects of sedative medications
- Not recommended during pregnancy                                                                        — traditional use suggests uterine stimulating properties at high doses
- Those with autoimmune conditions should consult a healthcare provider
- May interact with blood thinners at high doses
- Start with lower doses to assess individual tolerance

Typical Dosage Range

15mg – 300mg daily

Traditional Chinese Medicine uses 10-15g of dried herb daily in decoctions. Standardized extracts are used at much lower doses — 15-300mg depending on concentration.
The 15mg dose in Be Bliss reflects a concentrated standardized extract. Best taken with food. Effects
on mood and calm typically noticed within 1-2 hours of ingestion.

Research Notes

- Xian et al. (2014) — Published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, demonstrated
Uncaria rhynchophylla alkaloids significantly reduced anxiety-like behavior in animal models through
GABA-A receptor modulation.

- Shim et al. (2009) — Study in Journal of Ethnopharmacology showed rhynchophylline inhibited
amyloid-beta aggregation, suggesting neuroprotective potential relevant to Alzheimer's disease.

- Zhou et al. (2010) — Research demonstrated Uncaria rhynchophylla extract significantly reduced
neuroinflammation markers and protected against neuronal damage in oxidative stress models.

- Lin et al. (1999) — Published in Life Sciences, found rhynchophylline demonstrated significant
antiarrhythmic and cardiovascular protective effects.
