Suehirotake (Schizophyllum commune)

Suehirotake Mushroom Extract

Schizophyllum commune

The world's most widely distributed mushroom — found on every continent except Antarctica — Suehirotake (Schizophyllum commune) contains schizophyllan, one of the most extensively studied immune-modulating beta-glucans in medical research. A cornerstone ingredient in integrative immune support formulas in Japan for decades.

Benefits: Neuroprotection
Type: Mushroom
Forms: Capsule, Powder

What Is It?

Schizophyllum commune — known as Suehirotake in Japanese and Split Gill Mushroom in English —
holds the distinction of being the most widely distributed mushroom on Earth, found growing on decaying wood on every major landmass. Its distinctive split gill structure and remarkable adaptability to diverse climates have made it one of the most studied fungi in mycology.

While not widely known as a culinary mushroom in Western countries, Suehirotake has been consumed and
used medicinally in parts of Asia, Africa, and Latin America for generations.  Its primary claim to modern
scientific attention is schizophyllan — a unique beta-1,3/1,6-glucan that has been extensively studied
for immune support applications.

How It Works

Suehirotake's primary bioactive compound:

- Schizophyllan (SPG) — a highly purified beta-1,3-glucan that activates macrophages, NK cells, and enhances T-cell mediated immunity through Dectin-1 and other pattern recognition receptors

- SPG has been studied extensively in Japan as an adjunct to conventional cancer treatment — with
several clinical trials demonstrating improved immune parameters and quality of life

- Anti-Inflammatory — reduces excessive inflammatory cytokine production while maintaining balanced
immune activation

- Prebiotic Effects — may support beneficial gut microbiome composition

Side Effects & Considerations

Schizophyllum commune has a well-established safety profile in clinical research:

  • Well tolerated in multiple clinical trials

  • Very rare reports of mild digestive effects

  • May cause allergic reactions in rare cases — Schizophyllum is one of the few mushrooms known to occasionally cause respiratory infections in severely immunocompromised individuals  — not relevant at normal supplement doses in healthy individuals

  • Those with autoimmune conditions should consult a doctor

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing without medical supervision

Typical Dosage Range

250mg – 1,000mg daily

Clinical research with purified schizophyllan uses 40-250mg daily of the purified compound.
Whole mushroom extract doses of 250-1,000mg are used for general immune support.

Within the Troomy Daily blend, Suehirotake contributes schizophyllan's unique beta-glucan activity
to the comprehensive 14-mushroom immune formula.

Research Notes

- Okamura et al. (2016) — Systematic review in Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention documented schizophyllan's clinical research base as an immune adjunct in cancer treatment across multiple studies.

- Kanamoto et al. (2001) — Research demonstrated schizophyllan's significant NK cell and macrophage
activating properties through beta-glucan receptor mechanisms.

- Uno et al. (1996) — Randomized controlled trial found schizophyllan supplementation significantly
improved immune parameters and quality of life in gynecological cancer patients.
