CoQ-10 (Coenzyme Q10)
Ubiquinone / Ubiquinol
A vitamin-like compound found in every cell of the body, essential for mitochondrial energy production and one of the most powerful fat-soluble antioxidants known. Critical for heart health, cellular energy, and protection against oxidative stress.
What Is It?
CoQ-10 production naturally declines with age, and is also significantly depleted by statin medications (cholesterol-lowering drugs) — making supplementation particularly important for older adults and statin users.
How It Works
1. Energy Production — CoQ-10 is an essential component of the mitochondrial electron transport chain, the process by which cells convert nutrients into ATP (usable energy). Without adequate CoQ-10, mitochondrial energy production is impaired — leading to fatigue, weakness, and reduced organ function.
2. Antioxidant Protection — As a fat-soluble antioxidant, CoQ-10 protects cell membranes and mitochondria from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. This is particularly important for the heart, which is under constant oxidative stress from continuous high-energy demands.
Side Effects & Considerations
- Generally very well tolerated at standard doses
- Mild digestive side effects (nausea, stomach upset) occasionally reported — take with food to minimize
- May slightly lower blood pressure — monitor if on blood pressure medications
- May interact with blood thinners (warfarin) — consult your doctor
- May reduce the effectiveness of some chemotherapy drugs — consult oncologist if applicable
- Particularly recommended for anyone taking statin medications, which deplete CoQ-10 levels
- Best absorbed when taken with a fat-containing meal (fat-soluble nutrient)
Typical Dosage Range
100mg – 300mg daily
Standard maintenance doses range from 100-200mg daily. Higher doses (300mg+) are used therapeutically for cardiovascular conditions. Ubiquinol form is more bioavailable than ubiquinone — particularly important for those over 40 whose conversion ability diminishes. Always take with a meal containing fat for optimal absorption.
Research Notes
- Rosenfeldt et al. (2007) — Meta-analysis in Journal of Human Hypertension found CoQ-10 supplementation reduced systolic blood pressure by up to 17 mmHg and diastolic by up to 10 mmHg.
- Littarru & Tiano (2007) — Review in Molecular Biotechnology demonstrated CoQ-10's critical role in protecting against statin-induced myopathy (muscle damage).
- Sanoobar et al. (2016) — Randomized controlled trial found CoQ-10 supplementation significantly reduced fatigue and depression scores in multiple sclerosis patients.
