Blazei (Agaricus blazei)

Blazei Mushroom Extract

Agaricus blazei Murill

A Brazilian medicinal mushroom discovered in the 1960s after researchers noticed unusually low rates of cancer and disease in communities where it was regularly consumed. Agaricus blazei contains some of the highest concentrations of immune-activating beta-glucans of any known mushroom — making it one of the most potent natural immune support ingredients available.

Benefits: Immune Support, Neuroprotection
Type: Mushroom
Forms: Capsule, Powder

What Is It?

Agaricus blazei Murill — also known as the Royal Sun Agaricus, Cogumelo do Sol (Mushroom of the Sun), or Himematsutake — is native to the Atlantic rainforest region of Brazil.  It was first brought to scientific attention in the 1960s when researchers noticed that inhabitants of Piedade, Brazil — who regularly consumed this mushroom — showed remarkably low rates of cancer, diabetes, and other chronic diseases
compared to surrounding populations.

This observation triggered decades of research — particularly in Japan and Brazil — establishing Agaricus
blazei as one of the most promising medicinal mushrooms for immune support and overall wellness.
Today it is widely cultivated in Japan and Brazil and is among the most commercially significant functional mushrooms in the Asian wellness market.

How It Works

Agaricus blazei works primarily through its exceptionally high beta-glucan content:

- Beta-1,3/1,6-Glucans — Agaricus blazei contains some of the highest concentrations of immune-activating beta-glucans of any mushroom species — activating macrophages, NK cells, dendritic cells,
and T-lymphocytes through pattern recognition receptors

- ABM (Agaricus Blazei Murill) polysaccharides — unique polysaccharide fractions that have demonstrated particularly potent immune modulation in multiple research models

- Anti-Inflammatory Activity — reduces pro-inflammatory cytokine production through NF-κB inhibition

- Antioxidant Compounds — ergosterol and other antioxidants protect immune cells and other tissues from oxidative damage

- Blood Sugar Regulation — research suggests Agaricus blazei may improve insulin sensitivity and support healthy glucose metabolism

Side Effects & Considerations

Agaricus blazei has a good safety profile with growing clinical evidence:

  • Generally well tolerated at standard doses

  • May cause mild digestive upset in sensitive individuals

  • May lower blood sugar — monitor if on diabetes medications

  • Those with autoimmune conditions should consult a doctor due to immune stimulating properties

  • May interact with immunosuppressant medications

  • Not recommended during pregnancy or nursing
