Caffeine

Caffeine

1,3,7-trimethylxanthine

The world's most widely consumed psychoactive compound — a naturally occurring alkaloid found in coffee, tea, cocoa, and guarana. At appropriate doses, caffeine reliably improves alertness, focus,
reaction time, and physical performance through adenosine receptor antagonism.

Benefits: Energy, Focus, Performance
Type: Herbal Extract
Forms: Capsule, Liquid, Powder

What Is It?

Caffeine is a naturally occurring xanthine alkaloid found in over 60 plant species worldwide — most
notably coffee beans, tea leaves, cocoa beans, guarana berries, and yerba mate. As the world's most widely consumed psychoactive substance, caffeine has been used by humans for thousands of years and is among the most extensively researched compounds in nutritional science.

Caffeine Anhydrous — the form used in Natty Addy — is a concentrated, dehydrated form of caffeine that absorbs rapidly and consistently, providing predictable cognitive and performance effects without the variability of brewed beverages.

How It Works

Caffeine works primarily through adenosine receptor antagonism:

- Adenosine blocking — adenosine is a neurotransmitter that accumulates throughout the day and promotes drowsiness. Caffeine blocks adenosine receptors, preventing this fatigue signal and maintaining alertness

- Dopamine and norepinephrine — by blocking adenosine, caffeine indirectly increases dopamine and norepinephrine activity, improving mood, motivation, and focus

- Adrenaline release — stimulates the adrenal glands to release epinephrine (adrenaline), increasing heart rate and preparing the body for physical performance

- PDE inhibition — caffeine inhibits phosphodiesterase enzymes, increasing cellular cAMP levels which amplifies energy signaling throughout the body

When combined with L-Theanine (as in Natty Addy), caffeine's stimulant effects are smoothed and
extended — reducing jitteriness and anxiety while maintaining and enhancing focus and cognitive performance.

Side Effects & Considerations

Caffeine is safe and well tolerated for most adults at moderate doses but has important considerations:

- Can cause jitteriness, anxiety, or restlessness at higher doses or in caffeine-sensitive individuals
- May disrupt sleep if consumed within 6 hours of bedtime
- Regular use can lead to tolerance — periodic breaks help maintain effectiveness
- Withdrawal symptoms (headache, fatigue) possible after abrupt discontinuation of regular use
- Not recommended for those with cardiovascular conditions, anxiety disorders, or high blood pressure
without medical supervision
- Pregnant or nursing women should limit caffeine to under 200mg daily — consult healthcare provider
- Do not exceed 2 servings of Natty Addy daily (400mg caffeine maximum)
- Avoid combining with other stimulants or caffeine-containing products

Typical Dosage Range

50mg – 200mg per serving

Most cognitive research uses 100-200mg per serving. The classic nootropic stack pairs
100mg caffeine with 200mg L-Theanine (2:1 ratio). Natty Addy's full shot delivers 200mg
caffeine — equivalent to approximately 2 cups of coffee. Half-bottle dosing (100mg) is
recommended for those sensitive to caffeine or new to the product. Do not exceed 400mg
total caffeine daily from all sources.

Research Notes

- Einöther & Giesbrecht (2013) — Review in Psychopharmacology confirmed caffeine reliably improves sustained attention, alertness, and reaction time across multiple study designs.

- Haskell et al. (2008) — Published in Biological Psychology, demonstrated the L-Theanine + Caffeine combination significantly outperformed either compound alone on measures of attention, focus, and cognitive performance.

- Glade (2010) — Review in Nutrition found caffeine improved performance on a wide range of cognitive tasks including vigilance, reaction time, information processing, and working memory.

- Graham (2001) — Comprehensive review in Sports Medicine established caffeine as one of the most effective and well-documented legal performance enhancing compounds for both mental and physical performance.
